The first astronauts, who will travel to Mars, in addition to astrophysical and aeronautical knowledge, will have to be farmers, as announced NASA.
Due to the length of a Mars mission, estimated at five years between the outward and back, astronauts will be forced to grow their own food into the rocket to ensure their livelihood. Besides agriculture, the astronauts must also have knowledge of food, since they will cook their own food.
These crops will also serve as food for the crew, and it can also be used as a natural system to convert carbon dioxide to produce oxygen for the astronauts.
The foods that NASA has selected for cultivation in space are: lettuce, spinach, carrots, onions, radishes, peppers, strawberries, herbs and cabbage.
These crops can be developed both on the spacecraft as on the Mars planet itself, so it would be very interesting when first vegetable gardens will be built on the red planet.
